Home is more than a roof over our heads. It’s a place to belong, dream and hope.

But rising rents, the cost of living and a lack of genuinely affordable homes mean that nearly 300,000 families and individuals in England are facing the terrifying reality of homelessness. This isn’t fair.

To fix this, we’re calling on the UK Government to make private renting more affordable and invest further in social homes. Our plan to make change happen starts with you.

The Prime Minister has pledged to end rough sleeping in England - the most dangerous form of homelessness. This gives us a window of hope – and opportunity.  

We know that to truly end homelessness, we must make homes more affordable. For those of us facing homelessness, home can’t wait.

  • Make private renting more affordable, starting by restoring housing benefit to cover the true cost of rent.
  • Boost the number of social homes. This means investing to deliver new homes fast, buying suitable homes and bringing more than 300,000 long-term empty homes back into use.

How will restoring housing benefit help?

Housing benefit is meant to help people with lower incomes pay their private rent. The amount you can receive is set by Local Housing Allowance (LHA). But while rents have skyrocketed, LHA has remained frozen.

Now, less than 2% of properties in Britain are affordable to private renters relying on it, pushing many deeper into poverty and towards homelessness and ill health.

By restoring LHA to the real cost of rent, the UK Government can give breathing space to struggling individuals and families.

How will more social homes help?

Social homes are cheaper to rent and more secure than renting privately, so are key to ending homelessness.

The UK Government has already committed to a massive social home-building program in England. This is a hopeful step in the right direction, but will take time.

To help people now, the Government needs to release more funding so homes can be delivered faster, buy suitable homes on the market and bring over 300,000 long-term empty homes back into use.
