Dear Chancellor John Healey,
A home is more than a roof over our heads. It’s a place to dream, to belong, to hope.
But right now, rising living costs and a severe lack of genuinely affordable homes are leaving more of us facing the terrifying reality of homelessness than ever before. This isn’t fair.
We, the signatories of this letter, are calling on you to use the Autumn Budget on 28 October to make homes more affordable to end homelessness for good.
Dear Chancellor John Healey,
A home is more than a roof over our heads. It means a table for family meals; a desk to help us do well at school and at work.
By acting now, you can help the more than 177,000 children in England that are growing up in temporary accommodation, often in unsafe conditions that restrict their life chances.
And you can prevent more of us from being forced to sleep rough on our streets, or from sofa to sofa, struggling to hold down a job without a stable place to call home.
You have said that making life more affordable is a key priority. For those of us facing homelessness, there’s no better place to start than the cost of a safe home.
We call on you to:
Make private renting more affordable, starting by making sure that housing benefit covers the real cost of rent.
Accelerate the delivery of social homes. The government is rightly investing in social homes. But the scale of the challenge means you need to invest more up front to deliver them faster.
This includes buying suitable homes and bringing empty properties back into use.
By doing this, you give millions of people the breathing space they desperately need, support good growth in every postcode, and help deliver the Prime Minister’s pledge to end rough sleeping.
Your government wants to put ‘hope in every heart’. Let’s start by giving hope to everyone who is waiting for a settled home. Because home can’t wait.
Yours sincerely,
The undersigned.
