We haven't built enough social rent homes for decades, and private rents are sky-high. Now more than 300,000 households are facing homelessness in England.
To fix this, the UK Government must restore housing benefit to the real cost of rent. As rents have risen, Local Housing Allowance (LHA) – also known as housing benefit – has remained frozen.
Now less than 2% of properties in England are affordable to private renters who need it, pushing many deeper into poverty and towards homelessness.
Second, we need more social homes. The UK Government has already pledged the 'biggest council housebuilding program since the post-war period.’ This is a hopeful step in the right direction but will take time.
To help people now, the Government needs to invest more up front to deliver social homes fast, buy suitable homes on the market and bring more than 300,000 empty properties back into use.
The Chancellor has the power to fund these policies. Doing so would give hope to thousands of people waiting for a settled home and help end homelessness.
